On The Go Climbing Snacks - Portable Fuel Between Burns

01 — No-Bake Send Bites

Pocket rocket fuel between attempts.

Crag snack · 10 min, no bake · ~5g protein each

Climbing's answer to the gas-station candy bar — real fuel, no melting, no fork required. Batch a dozen on Sunday and they'll last the week.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup pitted Medjool dates

  • 1 cup rolled oats

  • ½ cup peanut butter

  • 2 tbsp chia or ground flax

  • ¼ cup dark chocolate chips

Method

  1. Blend the dates into a paste (or mash soft dates by hand).

  2. Mix with oats, peanut butter, and chia until a sticky dough forms.

  3. Fold in the chocolate chips.

  4. Roll into ~12 balls and chill 20 minutes. Keep in the fridge or the outer pocket of your chalk bag.

Why it fuels your send: Dates are fast-releasing carbs — exactly what you want mid-session before a powerful move; peanut butter and oats slow the burn so you don't spike and crash; chia adds omega-3s. Portable, non-melty, mess-free.

02 — Sender's Trail Mix

Recovery you can eat on the drive home.

Crag + recovery · 5 min · ~12g protein per handful

Every climber has a signature trail-mix ratio. This is a strong opening bid — protein-forward, with a recovery trick built in.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup dry-roasted edamame or soy nuts

  • ½ cup almonds

  • ½ cup pumpkin seeds

  • ½ cup dried tart cherries

  • ¼ cup dark chocolate chunks

Method

  1. Combine everything in a jar or zip bag.

  2. Shake to mix. That's the whole recipe.

Why it works: Soy nuts and pumpkin seeds are protein and magnesium powerhouses; tart cherries are a research-backed recovery food linked to reduced muscle soreness; and the dried fruit and chocolate deliver quick carbs. Endlessly portable.

03 — Chalk Bag Chickpeas

Crunchy, salty, send-approved.

Crag snack · 35 min · ~10g protein per serving

A savory, crunchy alternative to chips with real protein behind it. Shelf-stable, so it rides along on multi-day trips without a cooler.

Ingredients

  • 1 can (400g) chickpeas, drained + dried

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • ½ tsp smoked paprika

  • ½ tsp garlic powder

  • ½ tsp salt

Method

  1. Heat the oven to 400°F (200°C).

  2. Toss the chickpeas with oil and spices.

  3. Roast 30–35 minutes, shaking halfway, until crispy.

  4. Cool completely before bagging — that's what keeps them crunchy.

Why it works: Real protein and fiber in a crunchy, salty format, plus iron for oxygen delivery on long approaches. Shelf-stable and unbothered by a day in the pack.
