The Plant Rich Myth

Explaining why plant-rich, plant-protein-centered eating works for climbers.

Tackling the Biggest Myth: The Protein's Already There

Every climber trying plant-rich fuel hits the same wall first, and it isn't a V-grade. It's a question, usually from someone at the gym: "Where do you get your protein?"

The answer? It's already on your plate. Beans, lentils, tofu, tempeh, edamame, seeds, whole grains — they are protein. The catch isn't whether you can hit your numbers on plants. You can. It's that you have to be a little intentional about it: eat enough, spread it across the day, and mix your sources. Do that, and the research is clear that plant-rich eating holds up for building and keeping real climbing strength, with other added benefits.

Myths, Defused

  • "Plant protein is incomplete." Individual foods vary in amino acids; your diet doesn't have to be built meal-by-meal like a puzzle. Eat varied protein across the day and you're covered. (And soy is complete on its own.)

  • "You can't build muscle on plants." You can. The research says so when protein is adequate and varied, and plenty of strong elite climbers are living proof.

  • "You'll be weak or tired." Not if you fuel properly. Nourish well, and plant-rich climbers feel it on the wall – strong and well-recovered.
